Why are some books censored or banned altogether in our society?

They do it a lot in the UK, books that were written in the 19th & early 20th century often contain things that we would consider racist today, but they are mostly fiction and have to be seen in the context of the times they were written, sanitizing them to fit 21st century thinking does not do any good.
